Supporting Healthy Coral Reefs

The Baldwin Group staff supported federal, territorial, and local partners in developing a plan to reduce land-based sources of runoff.

Challenge

Playa Tamarindo, a popular beach destination on Puerto Rico’s Culebra Island, experiences sediment and pollution runoff that impact local waterways, posing a serious threat to local coral colonies.

Solution

On behalf of NOAA’s Coral Reef Management Program, The Baldwin Group staff supported federal, territorial, and local partners in developing a plan to reduce land-based sources of runoff. Activities included incorporating green infrastructure practices to help reduce and divert runoff, and then using NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management OpenNSPECT tool to determine the effectiveness of the effort.

Insight

Initial studies found that this process has helped reduce sediment loads entering local waterways, which will reduce impacts to corals.
